The Rosebush

5 O’clock tea

April 2nd, 2006

Apparently, Polish people assume that English people all stop everything they’re doing at 5pm each afternoon in order to drink tea.

As a result - when I went out with my Elementary students on Friday night, they bought me a mug with a print of ‘Torun’ on it. Also.. a book of Torun, with an almost perfectly constructed sentence which was very very poignant and sweet, which they all signed.

My False Beginner group bought me a bunch of flowers and a Zubrowka gift pack with a bottle of Zubrowka, two glasses (with lines to show where to pour the vodka and where to pour the apple) and a carton of apple juice… They also got me a tin box full of pierniki (Torun-made gingerbread) which you can put a candle in and it shines light through holes in the tin. They said some very sweet things to me and are clearly disappointed to know I’m not going to be teaching them next year, and that is the biggest confidence boost any new teacher could ask for, I think :)

Anyway… it was quite emotional saying goodbye to both groups :( I’m still teaching Pre-FCE for another week and a half, and all my Absolute Beginners til 25th April (urrrgh). Home for easter in a week and 4 days though :) Diving for my advanced cert with Jason! woo!
