The Rosebush

Huh?

May 19th, 2006

The judge, Mr Justice Goldring, recommended that the twice-married father-of-one should never be released. He will be considered for parole in twelve and a half years.”

Can somebody please explain this to me?  Isn’t parole the same thing as being released?

Well, if you get paroled isn’t similar to being released. The minor differences…

In order to be paroled, you have to pass several parole board hearings where they consider your crime, your behavior during your rehabilitation period you’ve been in jail, etc. If you are paroled, you still live with some restrictions on where you can go, where you can live, and have to meet weekly/monthly with a parole officer to monitor you. Others that were involved with your case can still testify to the parole board both for or against you being let out on parole. If you get into more trouble your sentencing if convicted is harsher.

Released is simply that, you’ve been here 5 years and served your time… get out and stay clean. There is no review or further monitoring of you or your whereabouts. If you get into trouble again generally the previous infractions have no bearing on the current charges.

But yeah, in the end the person is no longer incarcerated in either case.
